Fish Pond Filters
Fish pond filters are essential to your pond as they purify the water.
An efficient fish pond filter will remove metabolical waste the fish produces and any suspended solids in the pond. Without a filter the water can become toxic over time as the pollutants collect. There are a wide variety of fish pond filters available these days so be sure to do your research and select the one best for your situation. Below are important facts to keep in mind when buying your filter.
Types of Filters
Pond filters are used in conjunction with pond pumps and usually do not come with the pump but have to be bought separately. Filters can purify your water using just the mechanics or chemicals or you can get biological filters. Here are the most common types:
Submerged Filter: These are best for small to medium sized ponds. They need to get the water from the pump and return it back to pond after filtration. These can be placed anywhere in the pond but make sure it is easy to get to for cleaning.
External Filter: You will need an external filter if you have a large pond or features like waterfalls in order to keep all the pond water livable for your fish. These are usually anti gravity and therefore need an appropriate pump to send pressurized water to it. They can be placed anywhere, even remote from the pond for easy access.
Biological Filter: These days new models are incorporating this feature into the above submerged and external filters. This filter can breaks down fish waste and other organic matter into healthy bacteria that oxygenate the pond water.
The size you select is determined by the volume of water in your pond. Your filter should have throughput capacity to process five times the volume of your pond every hour. Although this is the general rule you should go up in filter capacity size for each of these factors: pond gets full sun, average temperature is high, a large number of fish in the pond, waterfall feature, fountain display, Koi fish. Remember having any Koi fish in your pond increases the level of care it will need. These fish also grow to a very large size.
A good pond water pump combined with a good pond filter can also take care of most of your algae problem. Clarifiers can be added to most pond filters which further help with algae control. Use both mechanical and biological fish pond filters together for best results specially if you have exotic fish and wildlife in the vicinity of your pond.
Remember that the goal of your filter is to remove toxins and harmful bacteria and keep your pond life healthy. Without the proper filtration system, just like in a fish aquarium, your fish will not survive. |
