Fish Pond Pumps
Fish Pond Pumps are very important to a pond and need to be chosen with care.
Fish pond pumps re-circulate the water in your pond so your fish can remain healthy. Without a pump the waste in the water will not get filtered and the pond will not be aerated. Two kinds are pumps are available: the submersible pump and out of water pump. Most small ponds only need a submerged pump while large fish ponds will require a larger, external pump.
Consider the energy efficiency and durability of a pond pump carefully. You pumps will essentially be running all day every day all year long. The energy bills for this product are a big part of your cost. So buying an inexpensive pump that is not as efficient and that will not last may end up costing you more in the long run.
Calculate the volume of water in your pond so you can select the appropriate size pump. This can be done easily as both your preformed liner and custom liners came with approximate size. You want to get a pump that will at minimum circulate the full volume of water every two hours. When in doubt of the size go slightly bigger than smaller. Most pumps give size as gallons per hour (gph). Therefore for a pond with 1000 gallons of water you need at least a 500 gph rated pump. This is sufficient if you have just a regular pond. But if you have added a waterfall or fountain you will need a higher rated pump for this feature - concentrate on the height that the pump is rated for.
Also, if your water feature is very high or you want it to be just awesome, consider a separate pump for it. There are other reasons to consider a second pond too. With fish in a pond you never want to turn off the water pump for more than an hour. Sometimes you may need to do so whether it is for cleaning or for repair. Also, the pump that runs your filter for biological waste needs to be allow slower movement of water to be most effective. In addition remember to place your pump in a spot that you can get tp easily during all seasons.
Select a pump that can handle some solids. Obviously your fish pond will have debris which may at some point reach the pump. You want a pump that will not keep clogging up with this but instead will pass the debris through the filter. Also, look into other safety feature so you can pick the ones that concern you most. Many submersible pumps have a float switch that prevent the pump from burning out if the pond water level drops low. You should always be checking the water level in your pond not just for the equipment but for the health of the fish. Some pumps also have other safety switches that turn it off should it overheat. You also want make sure the hoses on the pump will be sufficient for your purposes. You don't want to add extensions if you can help it. |
